Innocent's song is a chilling Christmas poem written by Charles Causley. It easily captures the reader's interest in a number of ways and gives him several different thoughts and emotions.
Causley manages to interest the reader primarily by lulling him into a false sense of security. In the very first verse, he writes: "What are all those presents / Lying on the kitchen floor?" This immediately gives us a false impression of the stranger as we would automatically assume that presents would be associated with kind people who give generously and many would at once conclude that Causley was talking about Santa Claus. However, the first two lines hints at this stranger's true nature as they both question his identity: "Who's that knocking at the window, / Who's that standing at the door,". These uncertainties almost subconsciously inform the reader that this mystery person may not be a kind man even though he appears to be one (which also seems to be the message behind this poem - first impressions can be misleading).
