On March 27, 1950, he famous writer and poet Julia Alvarez was born. Alvarez was born in New York City, New York. For the first three months of her life she live in the city, since it was he parents first and bad stay in the states they returned to their native lands of the Dominican Republic. Julia and her sisters were brought up my their mother, aunts, and maid. Her grandparents was very wealthy so they enjoyed spending time with them. Many of Julia's family members went to school in the United States. All of her family loved the Americans' attitude and trends. Alvarez's siblings lived and ate as if they were in America; the children attended American schools and thought it was a fantasy land(Notablebiographie). In the 1950's the Dominican Republic was run by a ruthless and violent dictator. Since Julia's grandparents were wealthy and had many connections, the family was out of harms way.
