Cherokee Nation Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the early 1700s, the Cherokee Indian's population estimated between 17,000 and 21,000. The Cherokee Indians were organized and functioned independently, before the Whiteman came. "Cherokee territory prior to European contact included portions of West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolina's" (Kessel & Wooster, 2005.) Though the Cherokee Nation extended throughout thousands or acreage, all the towns were independent except in time of war. "When war was declared, war chiefs assumed control, and the towns functioned as a unit" (Kessel & Wooster, 2005.) The Cherokee Nation faced much prejudice and racism. According to, Kessel & Wooster, (2005), "In 1691, without provocation, a number of South Carolina colonists attacked and killed several Cherokee. In 1705, South Carolina governor James Moore commissioned several men to capture Cherokee and other Indians.
