The Role of the Media in Liberal Democracies This essay will determine the role of the media in liberal democracies generally, where there is a greater emphasis on individual freedom and less emphasis on social goals such as equality (Ryan, Parkers and Brown 2003, 66). The media can be seen as having an entertainment role in the 21st century, but another discussed role is the role as an important information source. As Fog (2004, 1) states it, the media plays a role of supplying political information voters base their decisions on. The media also identifies problems in our society and can act like a "watchdog" and/or as the "fourth estate" which we rely on for uncovering errors and wrongdoings by those who have power.
