Conflict of meaning in Hamlet Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Act one scene three conveys the political atmosphere in Denmark and the extent it encroaches upon the family environment. Both Polonius and Laertes warns Ophelia to avoid the loss of honour that may result from a relationship with Hamlet. However, this advice becomes contradictory: Hamlet preys with "unmastered importunity" yet "his will is not his own". This confusion and the constant repetition to "fear" Hamlet's affection is the result of the politics of court. Hamlet's personal desires conflicts with the duty of royalty. Laertes uses the word "body" to refer to Hamlet as an individual as well as to the "health and sanctity of the whole state". Such a responsibility in the public eye creates a public persona of Hamlet, one that Laertes is familiar with. This role differs vastly from what Ophelia sees, or reports to Laertes and Polonius, and such a difference in the two Hamlets causes confusion and mistrust in Laertes, who is concerned by the standing of his family at court, and "best safety lies in fear".
