Nutrition Therapy for HIV Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a type of virus that replicates itself in the T-cells and destroys the lymphocyte. The physiological implications consist of glycoprotein binding to the white blood cell (CD-4) membrane receptors, and once it enters the cell, it synthesizes protein which is then inserted back into the cell membrane and finally it is released to infect another cell (Cowan & Talaro). Affects of HIV in the body varies on the progression of the disease. There are 3 different stages of the disease within the human body. The first is named the primary stage. During this time, the patient may not experience any symptoms other than those experienced when one has the flu. The second stage consists of more severe effects such as weight loss and malnutrition. Cells within the body diminish as the disease advances causing an increased risk in infection, and weakness also occur. For the last stages of HIV, complications involving the GI, neurological, pulmonary, and metabolic systems become present within the body.
