Introduction Diabetes is an epidemic in Counties Manukau. It is no
longer a disease for the 40 to 65 years old, but the youngest diagnosed with
Diabetes Mellitus are 6 year old children. In 2008, an estimate of
$57,000,000 is being spent every year by Counties Manukau District
Health Board for diabetes. Diabetes is the number one source of renal failure
(Lets beat Diabetes 2006). Along this line the Nurses' role in patient
care is critical. Through nurse-patient therapeutic partnership the long
term complications of diabetes can be prevented. In the long term, patient
self management is the key in preventing abnormal blood glucose (Walsh
2002).
The purpose of this case study is to present a 68 year old patient with
hypoglycaemia .She will be named Mrs S.for confidentiality.Mrs S
consent was granted to the author. The focus is to identify the 3 main problems
of the patient with hypoglycaemia. The Nursing care plan, interventions,
integration of pathophysiology and Mrs S. problems will be discussed.
