Psalm 23 opens with a sense of comfort and offers an immediate appealing message to its reader. This psalm is popular for church funeral services and also for use as a reading or in one of the many hymn settings. David, the speaker in this psalm, is thought to have written many of the psalms in the bible because of his talent in music as a harpist. David writes this psalm to the Lord and gives thanks to him for all he has done. Psalm 23 is a psalm through David that shows the relationship between the Lord and David as he looks to the Lord not only as his shepherd but his host as well. David starts the psalm out with saying "The LORD is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack." This is a strong introduction and conveys to the reader that David's relationship with the Lord is shown in the image of a shepherd to him. The Lord is revealed in both the old and new testament as a good shepherd. By David saying the Lord lacks nothing and gives him all he needs, we see the Lord is a good shepherd in David's eyes.
