Comic Relief in Tragedy Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Tragedy and drama playwrights typically use comic relief in order to relieve the dramatic tension in the play. Although it does distance the reader from the main plot, it can lighten the dark mood of the current situation. The character of the sentry in Antigone, written by Sophocles, supplies the play with this sense of comic relief. While the protagonist, Antigone, is tragically accused by the sentry for honoring her brother with a proper burial, the sentry foolishly rambles towards Creon to defend his own life. Further in the scene, the sentry adds a touch of comedy as he questions the place of Creon's pain. Sophocles uses the character of the sentry to enhance the tragic nature of Antigone by amplifying the emotional influence by a means of contrast.
In a simple and normal tragedy, the sentry would tell Creon about Antigone's crime without digressing from the matter. Sophocles, on the other hand, decides to use the sentry to supplement the poignant mood of the play.
