Summary of "Against Schools" Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In the short story "Against School" author John Taylor Gatto relates boredom to schools
and educational systems of America. Gatto who was a school teacher himself for thirty years
starts out by telling us his experience with students and teachers who were both bored in the
classroom. The students were not interested in what was being taught because they felt that
what they were being asked to learn were things they already knew, uneventful and that the
teachers were not any more knowledgeable as they were. The teachers were bored as well,
because they felt students were rude and unwilling to learn, and were only concerned with
grades. Gatto's opinion is that they both were products of America's school systems.
As a child Gatto learned a very important lesson from his grandfather. He learned that
being bored was an action that he and only he were responsible for it. He learned that it was his
responsibility to educate and entertain himself. Gatto found this to be a valuable lesson and
