Coastal sand dunes ecosystems are the transitional zones between the sea and solid land. They consist of the sediment deposited as result of wave action and moved inland by Aeolian processes. Because they are extremely fragile they suffer from both natural stress and human induced change, which makes them vulnerable. The dune systems are important as they protect low-lying coastal areas by acting as a buffer zone against high energy waves. 90% of Australians live within 100km of the coast which portrays how important beaches and the coastal environment is for society. It is only in the last two decades that the value of coastal sand dunes as ecosystems have been recognised. The coastal dunes are highly specialised ecosystems whose plant communities can be seriously degraded or destroyed by natural changes including sea level change, cyclones and storms.
