During World War II, the Pacific Campaign was highly contested. It seemed that whoever controlled the seas of Southeast Asia controlled the balance of power in the area. In an effort to fully gain control of the Pacific, the Japanese and American naval forces met on the high seas in early June of 1942, and the Battle of Midway forever changed the course of events leading to the demise of the Japanese Empire.
After Japan's first round of sweeps across the Southeast Pacific resulted in huge victories for the Navy, including the eventual bombing of Pearl Harbor, Japan's chief admiral, Isoroku Yamamoto began to draw up plans to begin the country's second sweep of attacks. Due to strategic differences between the Imperial Army and Navy, the plans were not finalized until April of 1942. Because the attack on Pearl Harbor did not take out the American carriers, Yamamoto's main focus during his second wave of attacks was to destroy the carrier force.
