Sonnys Not The Only One Feeling The Blues Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The story "Sonny's Blues" by James Baldwin is about two African American brothers. One is the narrator of the story who tried his best to turn his inner pain of rascism and social neglect into something that he could be proud of; he became a respectable teacher. The other is his brother, who you learn in the beginning of the story, was arrested in a drug raid on an apartment. The people who lived there were dealing heroin, and with this the narrator has to come to terms with his inner feelings, and he can no longer live in denial of the pain he feels inside. He has to come to the conclusion that he and his brother, although they grew up in the same place, they have dealt with their troubles differently. The brother of Sonny is left feeling guilty and resentful for disobeying his mother's wishs to watch over Sonny, and it shows by going through a series of why questions, he also feels resentful for the Harlem lifestyle, as well as, the music Sonny loves so much.
