There have been a lot of controversies over who discovered oxygen. Three scientists, namely Carl Scheele, Joseph Priestley, and Antoine Lavoisier, managed to isolate the gas in the 1770s. Although Scheele and Priestley managed to isolate the ¡°air¡± previous to Lavoisier, they both adhered to the ¡°Phlogiston Theory¡±, which was recognized by scientists in that era and thus failed to realize the importance of their ¡°discovery¡±. Lavoisier, however, disproved the presence of phlogiston and partially identified the true nature of oxygen. (Zare, 2001) The author¡"s view is that Scheele and Priestley started the discovery process of oxygen while Lavoisier is the true discoverer of oxygen.
