Unsinkable Ship, Sinks - The Titanic Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Titanic was supposedly indestructible and was actually called "practically unsinkable" by Captain Smith, when watertight compartments were shut. The sinking of the ship left the whole world in shock when the impossible happened. The story of the Titanic will live on in history for the rest of eternity. The greatest, fateful, naval tragedy began at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast on March 31, 1909. American J.P Morgan and Mercantile Marine Co funded the money for all of the construction. Lord Pirrie, the director of Harland and Wolff shipyard, naval architect Thomas Andrews, the shipyard's manager and head of the design department, and Alexander Carlisle, the shipyard's draughtsman and manager designed the RMS Titanic. Designed to compete with other ships, such as the rival Lusitania and Mauretania, the Titanic gained the titles of the largest, most luxurious ship ever to operate. The ship stood at 882 feet 9 inches long, 92 feet wide with a gross register tonnage of 46,328 long tons and the height from the deck of the boat to the water line measured 59 f......
