Why did 30 million people have to die just because of such a small trigger? World War I was a terrible 6 year war. It started with Gavrilo Princip's assassination of the Archduke of Austria Hungary, and his wife. Germany and Austria Hungary then declared war on Serbia. Even though Woodrow Wilson, the U.S. president was not involved in the war, the U.S. took part in it 1 year before it ended because Germany was attacking innocent ships with their u - boats. Although this war was initiated with the assassination of the archduke of Austria - Hungary's throne, many long range causes that had building up over time contributed to the outbreak of WW I.
The first long range cause of World War I was militarism which is a build up of an army and weapons. The more people and weapons you have the stronger you are. The military men had to know tactics for each kind of weapon. One kind of weapon that was used was poison gas which burned any thing it was thrown on.
