INDIVIDUALISM Individualism was a unique concept that developed in the late eighteenth century Europe, which placed the individual on the highest pedestal, and considered the State to be merely a tool of protection from internal and external aggression so as to allow individuals to attain the peak of development without any interference. Its six functions of the State according to the individualistic theory are: 1) The protection of the state and individuals against foreign aggression 2) Protection of individual against individual, in matters of physical harm (injury, aggression and killing), slander, personal restraint, etc 3) The protection of property (theft, dacoity and other types of protection of property) 4) Protection of individuals against false contracts or breach of contracts 5) Protection of the invalid persons 6) Protection of individuals against preventible epidemics like plague or Malaria However, many individualists who believe in the 'survival of the fittest' theory, do not agree with the last two functions of the State.
