After the fall of Roman Empire in the year 476, the Christian church gained its power in legal, political, educational, and especially entertainment institutions. Music during Medieval period was important because it was the only source for people to entertain, specifically for members of nobility and church society. Because of this, the need to preserve music arose, and Pope Gregory I ordered music to be catalogued and the music was named after him, Gregorian Chant or plainchant. Plainchant's texture was monophonic, in other words it was single-line melody due to the idea of simplicity praised by the Church at that time, it was also sung the same part by a single person or by a choir. The text in plainchant was always in Latin, and it was either syllabic - sing one note for one syllable - or melismatic - many notes were sung per syllable. In addition, plainchant was usually unknown because anonymous composers, happening to write music to glorify God, not personal recognition, composed most of the compositions.
