The PIcture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wild Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Theme is the central idea in a piece of writing. The theme of a book helps to understand the meaning of the book. Theme also helps to understand the characters in a book. Oscar Wild wrote, The Picture of Dorian Gray and filled it with lots of exciting imagery to allow the reader better understanding of the characters and theme. The imagery plays a vital part in understanding the theme because imagery paints a picture. In the first pages of the novel, the beauty and scent of flowers represents the main character, Dorian Gray. Dorian's portrait sits in the studio and is, "a young man of extraordinary personal beauty" (Wild 1). The flowers are a symbol of Dorian's beauty and fragileness but eventually they will wilt and die. Dorian is a, "Young Adonis who looks as if he were made out of ivory and rose-leaves" (82). Words such as, "wonderfully handsome, finely-curved scarlet lips, frank blue eyes and gold hair" (11) are all used to describe Dorian's beauty and youth.
