Dorothea Lynde Dix, also known as "Dragon Dix," was an activist for the welfare of the mentally ill. Currently, the mentally ill are treated as people with a need to be helped and cared for. In Dix's day, the mentally ill were treated as criminals with no excuse for their actions. Dix recognized that the mentally ill were sick and needed to be treated and cared for. Dix helped those that no one else really cared about. She was a remarkable woman and reformer.
EARLY LIFE
Born April 4, 1802 in the town of Hampden, Maine, Dorothea was instantly dealt a complicated hand. Her father was an alcoholic and her mother was very ill. Dorothea was forced to grow up very soon for her siblings. She suffered extreme neglect and emotional abuse from her father. After jumping around to different relatives' houses, Dix was ready to settle down in one place. In 1819, after a series of events including her fathers death, Dix opened a school for girls to support her family.
