Modern interpretations of Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus, tribune of 133BC differ significantly. They provide a variety of perspectives on the major aspects of Tiberius life and in particular they offer different views of the reasons behind his Lex Agraria. These modern historical assessments also differ in their interpretations of the legality of his tribunate; predominately these assessments differ in how they view the methods he employed to achieve his goals. Such differences are evident in the work of Carolyn Desfosses, Peter Brunt, L.P Wilkinson, and Michael Parenti all whom emphasize differing aspects of Tiberius' Gracchus life.
Desfosses has a generally flattering interpretation of Tiberius Gracchus; she states that he was "a good Roman" and that he strongly believed in the idea that a tribune was answerable to the people and not to the senate. She further argues that Tiberius believed that "if he denies the people of their power, he is denying his own power which is dependent upon the people."
