In my opinion J.B.Priestley presents Eva Smith as a victim of bad luck, society, the Birling family and Gerald in the play "An Inspector Calls."
Eva Smith is a victim of the Birling family and Gerald, because they all exploit her for their own personal gain because of her position in society. She is also presented as a victim of society because the in 1912 there was no welfare state, furthermore the government was set up to benefit the rich and abuse the rights of the poor. Yet Eva Smith is also presented as a victim of her own actions as it was her who started the strike for higher wages in Mr. Birling's factory. When she was out-spoken and then fired it started the chain of events which eventually led to her suicide.
There are several reasons that Eva Smith is victimised by her position in society, she is a pretty young woman who has no job or family to support her financially. If she couldn't find work turning to prostitution "go on to the streets" may have been her only option to survive. Although this may seem drastic it would have kept a roof above her......
