Born in London in 1757, William Blake was a uniquely gifted figure whose precocious talents emerged at an early age. As a child he displayed a vivid imagination and was taught mostly at home, with his bible as his main schoolbook. His skills extended to poetry, illustration, painting, and printing. He was apprenticed as an engraver and printer at the age of eleven. Not one to follow the conventional path of art, he chose instead to follow his own. Because he challenged the customs of the time and the established institutions of state, while regarding his own views as being of national importance, many who knew him considered him to be mad. Mostly unrecognized for his works in his own day, sometime after his death he came to be regarded as giant of the arts and also a visionary because of the range and variety his works many of which contained spiritual themes. Blake struggled throughout his life with poverty, scratching together a living with the use of his illustrative work and painting, which he used to support his true passion which was writing poetry.
