Stephen B. Oates begins introducing Nat Turner who was born into slavery in Southampton County, Virginia in the early 19th century. His mother allegedly tried to kill him rather than see him grow up to live as a slave. Around the age of four or five, people had realized that there was something special about Nat Turner. He had the ability explain things that happened before he was born, and when he was given a book, he already knew how to read. No one knew who taught Nat Turner how to read, and education was not common amongst slaves in the early Southern Colonies. His abilities impressed other slaves. Nat Turner's owner, Benjamin Turner, was also impressed with his abilities; he showed Nat Turner off to his guests at church gatherings and always mentioned that Nat Turner "would never be of any service to anyone as a slave."(pg. 13) Everyone around Nat Turner agreed that he had too much sense to be raised in bondage.
