Killer whales are the largest cetaceans in the ocean. Their genus Orcinus has only one species, orca. Its name implies that they are dangerous to humans when in fact, the only humans that are in danger of orca whales are sea world trainers. Almost all incidents of Killer whales attacking humans have been by captive whales, the most recent attack happened in February where an experienced trainer was killed at a SeaWorld in Orlando. Male Killer whales typically range from 20-25 feet, the females are usually a few feet smaller. Large dorsal and pectoral fins are very common in orcas. Orcas are classified in to three general types: Resident: Commonly found in the Pacific, near North America. Resident orcas tend to create complex and large families. Transient: The main characteristic that sets these whales apart is the fact that they only eat marine mammals. They travel in small packs and can occasionally be seen on the animal planet lunging themselves on to the beach to eat baby seals.
