In American society it is not easy to become wealthy; it is not even easy to survive and make a decent living. The land of opportunity turned out not so opportunistic. In the essay "Class in America" George Mantsios challenges the myths about social class and the role it takes in our lives. He states America is not a "Classless society" but a society with sharp distinctions between the classes, and a tendency to ignore these. In the essay "Serving in Florida" Barbara Ehrenreich states the horrifying conditions that she experienced as an "unskilled worker".
