I was employed for 14 years in the trucking industry, and have had firsthand experience on how obedience to authority is pushed beyond reality. The reality is that authority is challenged and obedience is manipulated in order to accommodate the drivers and corporation's needs. Obedience really is a choice and it's very common to find employees bending or breaking regulations to benefit both themselves and the corporation. What makes one employee decide for obedience where another decides for disobedience? Erich Fromm in his essay called "Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem" says, "The capacity for courage depends on a person's state of development . . . Only if he has immerged as a fully developed individual and thus has acquired the capacity to think and feel for himself, only then can he have the courage to say "no" to power, to disobey".
