Gladiators: Pawns in the Games of Society Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

"The beating heart of Rome is not the marble of the Senate, it is the sand of the Colosseum" (Gladiator). In Ancient Rome, the term gladiator refers to an individual, commonly a professionally skilled fighter, captive, or slave, trained to entertain the masses by way of engaging in combats with another person or animal (Mitchell 162). These young men risked their lives in order to provide entertainment for the public, however what is commonly overlooked is the fact that the purpose of these games were far more complex than for the mere intention of amusement. Such blood sports were commonly used as means of manipulating the masses and as visuals in representing the brute force and power of the Roman Empire. Gladiatorial games contained both social and political implications as they were utilized as a means of political advancement, financial revenue, display of status and power, and the personification of the Roman morale.
