Paradoxical Relations Between the Greeks and Their Gods Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The Greeks had a paradoxical relationship with their gods in which the gods were the providers and the protectors of humans, but at the same time they were the cause of human suffering. Paradoxical means having self-contradictory properties, such as "This statement is a lie." We are aware of the relationship because of the many stories passed down to us like Demeter, Callisto, and The Pleiades, which talk about the gods taking care of and protecting them, whereas other written stories like Hyacinthus, Arachne, and Dionysus tell us about the gods causing human suffering. Throughout all of Greek mythology, even though the gods provided and protected, the suffering they caused seems to outweigh the good.
In many of the Greek stories the gods are protecting and providing for the humans in one way or another. In the story of Demeter, she is the goddess of harvest and the humans solely depend on her for food. Without her giving harvest to them every year they would eventually starve to death.
