Juvenal- a roman poet, once said "It is not easy for men to rise whose qualities are thwarted by poverty." This proverb is invigorated by the inhabitants of the densely populated filthy streets of early nineteenth century London and almost a century later still proves meaningful in Western Society. The inability of poor people to escape poverty is an equally relevant observation today, as it was in Charles Dickinson's Oliver Twist. This inability to escape poverty is heavily correlated with the possible adoption of self destructive behaviours and the isolation that many of these impoverished communities face. These two factors inhibit the social and economical advancement of the impoverished communities, forever holding them in the dark- a tenebrous slum or ghetto riddled with self destructive behaviours.
