Moulin Rouge is a piece of artwork, with music intricately woven into captivating dialogue, exquisite costumes and an elaborate set to speak to the audience and draw them into a world grounded on "freedom, beauty, truth and love." Baz Luhrman creates an enchanting tale of two star-crossed lovers, and his use of music to lure the audience into the plot and emphasize the underlying themes will be discussed in the following essay. The storyline of the movie involves a Bohemian poet, Christian, whose lyrical talent enables him the opportunity to work with a musical troupe in developing a play for the owner of the Moulin Rouge - a club, brothel and a theatre. His poetic articulation also captures the heart of Satine, Moulin Rouge's star courtesan. Christian and Satine establish a deep relationship, which stirs envy in the Duke who wants Satine for himself and thus orders Christian's death. As Satine battles a terminal illness, she tries to prevent Christian's death by satisfying the Duke's wishes, but she once again professes her love to him via song at the end of the show. ......
