A text can either reflect the values of their context, of break out in individualism and go against the expected challenging existing values and provoking thought within the audience. Texts however, generally conform to the values of their context because it is thought to be easier to engage an audience in what they are familiar with and personally believe in. Furthermore, because the values may be popular for the time the author may well also invest belief in them and it is then therefore easier to write about what they know and trust in. Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Junger's Ten Things I Hate About You and Wyler's Wuthering Heights all correspondingly investigate the values of their context and communicate ideas about marriage, gender roles, individualism and the representation of women. All texts studied, as romantic comedies focus on the relationships between men and women as they grow from interest into marriage.
