Myth in Homer by Lowell Edmunds Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the beginning of his article, Lowell Edmunds spends a brief amount of time "establishing the category of myth" or in other words, defining myth. He deems this a necessary start to a chapter written on a subject that had previously been held in no small amount of uncertainty. He traces the etymology of the word "myth" back to the time of Homer and acknowledges that in Homer's day the word did not have the same meaning. However this does not in necessity dictate that "myth" as we understand it today did not exist at the time Homer penned his epics but merely that it was not referred to by that name. Edmunds writes, "The question that should be addressed to the ancient Greek evidence is not 'Did the Greeks have a category of, or a terminology for, myth?' but 'Did the Greeks have a practice of oral storytelling and was this accorded any particular status?'" (Edmunds 415). We can see clearly in Homer's epics that there is an undeniable practice of oral storytelling. In the Iliad we find stories told among others by Nestor, Phoenix, Achilles, and......
