Rip Van Winkle-a critical analysis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving is one of the most famous and commonly read short stories of all times. It was originally published in a collection called The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon. However, the setting of the story takes place in a period when the ideology of "Art for Art sake" was not accepted in literature. It was dedicated to a period right before and after the American Revolution. Thus, Rip Van Winkle was not just a story but a tool in disguise, manipulated to deliver a political, historical and social message to the people of America. The short story is narrated through the voice of an unnamed narrator as he begins by describing the beautiful landscape of the Kaatskill Mountains. As the story unfolds before the readers, the central character of Rip Van Winkle is revealed to be a "simple good natured man" but also a "hen-pecked husband" who obediently attends to his neighbors needs but is never available to do his own business, in laymen's term Rip, the protagonist was an extremely lazy person.
