On April 20th of 2010, A major disaster struck The Gulf of Mexico. A BP oil rig exploded and dumped approximately 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf which adds up to approximately $21.1 billion in penalties. Remember the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989? That disaster spilled onto the rocky beaches of Alaska. The difference between that spill and the one in the Gulf is the type of beaches. It's possible to clean oil off rocks. Sand is a completely different story. The oil from the Gulf is drifting into wetlands that are highly sensitive to pollution. Toxins will remain there for years to come. April was an awful time for the spill. This is the time for hatching and rearing for animals living around the coast. Pelican, shrimp and alligators were all reproducing or preparing too. This'll hurt their population immensely. They're going to start diving in polluted water to search for more food then they'd normally considering they're now having to provide for themselves along with their offsprings.
