Oedipus Literary Analysis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In Sophocles' tragic drama, "Oedipus", there is clearly a mood of confusion and mystery. Oedipus, the protagonist, is told about the prophecy that the murderer of the former King Laius must be found and exiled from Thebes in order to stop the deadly plague. This drives Oedipus from seeking the murderer and the truth. Ironically, however, Oedipus's tragic flaw is his inability to see the truth, and the resistance in accepting the truth. This flaw is portrayed in the prophecies, ironies and the theme of sight versus blindness and sight versus "insight," throughout the drama.
In the very beginning of the drama, Creon is sent to the Delphic oracle to find the answer as to why the plague has hit Thebes, and how to stop this plague. To find out who the murderer of Laius is, Oedipus goes to the most well know prophet at the time, Tiresias. When Oedipus accuses Tiresias of being the murderer, Tiresias tells Oedipus that Oedipus is in fact the murderer and the curse.
