Successful Rulers: Augustus and Tiberius Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Twelve Caesars, Suetonius writes about the lives of the different emperors of the Roman Empire. Two of the emperors, Augustus and Tiberius, both possessed positive and negative characteristics which greatly affected their rule. Suetonius depicts Tiberius as a hated ruler and Augustus as a favored ruler by the people of Rome. Both Augustus and Tiberius were successive rulers of the Roman Empire. The level of success of Augustus and Tiberius was greatly affected by their wisdom, greed or generosity, and temperament. Augustus, in the beginning of Suetonius' biography, did not seem to be very wise. Suetonius writes about how Augustus was nearly captured at Italy, when he had decided to greet a flotilla of biremes, not knowing they were Pompeians (50). This event showed how Augustus had made an unwise decision since he had hastily gone to greet the unknown people. Yet Augustus proves to be a wise and successful ruler because of his treatment of the senate. He knew that the Senate was the sign of the old Republic and that the people of Rome had a great deal of trust in the old Republi......
