In the early 1800's theatre plays were used merely as a form of light hearted romantic entertainment, but Henrik Ibsen wrote A Doll's House in a manner that used drama as a vehicle to examine social issues of the time period. Exposing the flaws in the Helmer marriage, he brought private issues to light and provided an advocacy for women. The character's develop throughout the play, each one forced to undergo major social alterations and experiencing life changing events. The genius use of symbology, developing characters, and irony are all substantial to Ibsen's intended themes of self realization, independent thinking, and societies downfalls
A Doll's House contains a lot of symbology. The title itself symbolizes the way that Torvald treats his family. He seems to just put up with them in order to sustain his self image. The title also symbolizes the way that people in society tend to play "roles", instead of just being themselves. The costume that Nora wears to the Christmas party seems symbolic of the way......
