Septima Poinsette Clark is a name not frequently heard of when one is involved in a civil rights movement conversation. Even though her name may not be readily mentioned, the work she put in is no less important than that of a Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. or Malcolm X. This woman of great merit, achievement and most importantly heart was an educator and motivator. Mrs. Clark's goal was to educate blacks in matters of not only academia, but women's rights, as well. Her work would be the small, building blocks that created the foundation of the civil rights movement.
The impact Septima Clark had on civil rights began many years back in Charleston, South Carolina when she was named chairman of the black Young Women's Christian Association. During this chapter of her life, Mrs. Clark was early on influenced by the goings on in her hometown.
