Dynamics of a Destined Hero: The Relationship Between Free Will and the Gods in the Aeneid Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The relationship between free will, the power of the Gods and fate in Virgil's, The Aeneid, can be clearly illustrated through the gradual pursuit of destiny by the epic's hero, Aeneas. At many points in his journey, he rejects the will of the Gods in favor of his own causes, but ultimately he voluntarily submits to his fate. Although he initially does not realize, each of his actions are being watched and monitored by the Gods very carefully. Venus, Juno, Jupiter, and the rest of the deities constantly keep Aeneid's free will in check, as he attempts to fulfill his ultimate destiny of founding the Roman Empire. Aeneas doubts his fate several times, but once his destiny is finally revealed in the underworld by Anchises, Aeneas never falters. The Gods, fueled by their own loyalties, jealousies, and grudges act as bumpers that keep Aeneas focused on his goal as he voyages into foreign lands. While Aeneas exercises free reign over his actions, it seems that Virgil is suggesting that only mortals who submit to the will of the Gods will be met with success, because their fate is already p......
