Illiteracy in America Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Some may say illiteracy is not a major problem in America, however it is. There are two young boys who were my neighbors when I was younger; since they were foster children after several years they moved away. However, their foster mom sees them quite frequently and always gives me updates on how they are doing. She told me they are not doing well in school; they are both in their last years of high school but they can barely read and write. She said the have repeated a few grades, but the teachers do not want to take the time to help them learn, so they passed them even though they were failing. Illiteracy is a real problem in America, and though there are some things being done to help solve the problem, there is much more that can be done. Illiteracy is most common in poor suburban areas or small towns; it is also common in big cities where the schools are large and a child is a name instead of a number.
