Discovery of The Double Helix Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Few discoveries have revolutionized the scientific world, especially the area of biology, as did the discovery of the shape of DNA. Francis Crick and James Watson worked on discovering the structure of DNA for several years. They succeeded and published their results in April of 1953, and were awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine and physiology in 1962, along with Maurice Wilkins. Watson wrote The Double Helix six years after winning the Noble Prize, and the book gives a detailed, personal account of how the discovery came to be. The book is intriguing because it is so personal; but at the same time it gives a lot of scientific details about the structure of DNA that would at least be partially comprehendible to the average person. One reason this book was so incredibly enjoyable to read, was due to the fact that Watson says exactly what he is thinking. He blatantly admits that he does not know any crystallographic techniques; and numerous other occasions he admits that his skills are inadequate in many other areas of science.
