In G. B. Shaw's Pygmalion, Professor Higgins attempts to transform Eliza Doolittle ( a florist) from a perfect representative of the Cockney speaking community into what he thinks a `lady` should be in many respects including in terms of language use. Colonel Pickering (the professors friend) treats her like a lady and ignores her talk. Eliza observes that any success she has is attributable to Pickerings approach rather than to Higgins!
