In this essay, I will argue that development is fundamentally a political process. I will define key terms to put the concept of development in context. I will show how power distribution is ingrained in every aspect of upgrading the capabilities and potential of a nation. Using Marxism and the Western ethnocentric perspectives of development as examples, it becomes clear how ideological paradigms change the framework used for economic and social policies in the process of development. Finally I will show how the West dominates the international development process, making development ultimately an issue of unequal negotiations and trade which is also essentially political. Development in context Development involves the process between two connected states of existence, one being more complete than the other.
