Platos Republic Justice Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Plato's Republic, Socrates defines justice in two ways, as being harmonious and as each person doing their own job. The harmonious definition aims at the relationship of the conflicting parts of the person or state. Socrates divides both the soul and the state into three parts. The soul's three parts are reason, appetite, and spirit. Reason is the part that allows the soul to weigh out decisions and decipher between what is good and what is bad. The appetite is what reason is out to defeat. The appetite is blind and simply seeks gratification in any way possible, whether what it longs after is good or bad, moral or immoral. The spirit is closer to reason than appetite, it is the natural born strong will and courage in a person. The different parts of the soul have their own wills and in their combination and balance, the soul finds its way. I would argue that Plato, through Socrates, is very close to defining justice correctly. His method of sifting down the soul and state to their purest forms allows him to break down each part and make sense of them and how they all add......
