The exclusion of some items from the asset section of the balance sheet often leaves tongues wagging as to why they are not included. For a particular item to be treated as an asset for accounting purposes, a probable future benefit of owning it must exist; the business must have an exclusive right to control the benefit; the benefit must arrive from some past transaction or event and lastly the asset must be capable of measurement in monetary terms (Mc Laney and Atrill, 2005).Items which fail to meet these criteria simultaneously are therefore not treated as assets for accounting purposes. From these conditions an asset can simply be defined as a tangible or intangible resource that is owned or controlled by an accounting entity, and which is expected to generate future economic benefits (Thomas, 2002).
