Romeo and Juliet Dramatic Purposes Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the play "Romeo and Juliet", by William Shakespeare, there are many examples of dramatic purposes. The main three purposes that are entitled throughout the play are the setting, characters, and atmosphere. In the play, William Shakespeare creates a mental image of the setting in which the play takes place. In the small town of Verona, Mercutio, Tybalt and Benvolio are essential characters in the play that have a great influence on the violent and suspenseful atmosphere. The characters have different personalities that contribute to the plot. Mercutio's offensive behavior, Tybalt's aggressiveness, and Benvolio's peaceful nature are some of these characters. The setting is a vital dramatic purpose because it gives the audience an idea of where things are taking place, thus making it more realistic. In the play "Romeo and Juliet" the "ancient citizens" (1.1.86) live in the "quiet...streets" (1.1.85) of "fair Verona" (1.1.2).
