Sex, tie-dye, drugs, and general anarchy are the reputation of the 1960s. The youth of this decade in particular were especially susceptible to addiction and chronic carelessness. Joyce Carol Oates creates this theme of carelessness in her work, Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?. This a time where suburban living sets up a false sense of security and a certain amount of relaxed parenting gives way to a generation where common concerns are abandoned. This lenient parenting is directly seen in the character of Connie, an arrogant teenager with a separation in her family among generations. Another character that is essential to the storyline is Arnold friend, who is meant to be the satanic influence of this era. Jealousy is a key component as well, being one of the seven deadly sins. The rise of suburbs in America presented parents with an alternative to city-life. This idea is present within the story's context, but at the same time Connie lives in the rural, long-driveway type neighborhood.
