Odysseus A Bad Leader Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Although heroes are clever, determined, and skilled, their leadership abilities exhibit occasional flaws. However, these flaws do not undercut their heroic accomplishments. A great example of a flawed hero is Odysseus. In the Odyssey, Homer portrays Odysseus as a strong and courageous man who, along with his men, fights in the battle of Troy. Unfortunately, in his quest to return to his homeland Ithaca, he faces a series of trials that delays his journey by fifteen years; all in which he overcomes. Although Odysseus is a hero based on his achievements, he is a bad leader because he has flaws such as hubris, lack of communication with his crew, and a bad temper. In his encounter with Polyphemus, the Cyclops, and the son of Poseidon, Odysseus exhibits his hubris after illustrating his shrewdness. First, after Polyphemus devours two of Odysseus's men, Odysseus cleverly makes up a strategy to escape from the Cyclops's cave.
