During the rocky period of 1865 and 1900, American industrial workers encountered both
good and bad times. Once the long, brutal Civil War was over, the United States was able to pull
itself together and began to further urbanize. During that time, which killed much of the working
population, many people began to to appreciate their skills more and more due to the lack of
human resources. During the period of 1865 and 1900, life was greatly impacted for American
industrial workers due to government actions, labor unions, immigration reforms, and
technological changes.
Most government actions at the beginning of this period was good for large companies,
primarily banks and railroads against the common American industrial worker. But by the end of
the 19th Century, government began to focus more on health and safety regulations, as well as
anti-trust to prevent big businesses from becoming too powerful, and also from harming the
